Newsletter September 2007 Editor: Michael Round ALIVE AND KICKING! Despite my gloomy speculations last time, we’re up and running again for the new season. You should find enclosed a copy of our 2007/8 programme: our thanks, as always, to Paul Wright for putting it together and to Ray Downing for typesetting and producing it. Those of you subconsciously programmed to turn up twice a month should notice that – as forecast last time – meetings will now be held ONCE a month, on the third Tuesday. Scan the programme, though, and you’ll also find national exhibitions, Philatelic Congress, the Society Dinner, and an “away-day” to Orpington. There is even more, of which details weren’t available when going to press. Grab a pencil and add these dates now: Joint Auctions at Epsom, 24th March 2008 (yes, Easter Monday); Kingston, 20th June 2008 (actual venue probably Surbiton: details later) – and, soonest of all, WALLINGTON this coming November 6th (2007). SUBSCRIPTIONS became due on September 1st: rates (as before) are adults, £7.00, OAPs £4.50, juniors £2,00. You can post your cheques to Tony Clarke (address on programme-card). AUCTION NEWS. After years of sterling and much appreciated work, Mike Warwick has handed over to me the job of Auction Secretary: the change-over was formalised at the AGM. My own thanks go to Mike’s help, not least in forwarding me template forms for future use. One of these is enclosed: if you want to SELL lots at the Wallington auction (see earlier), please enter the details on this form and either post or e-mail it to me (contact details are on programme-card if not above). Do this quickly! - Wallington organiser John Tate wants to plan ahead and get the completed list ready by the end of September. You not only sell surplus material, you also help the society: we submitted 43 lots to Kingston’s auction last June, of which 26 sold, netting the Society a commission of £9.61 (every little helps, as a sign in Tesco’s ladies’ loo is supposed to have said). Wimbledon’s total allocation this time is 50 lots: enough for everyone to submit a few. All paid-up Wimbledon members should receive the Wallington catalogue in due course: this is a resource your subscription helps to pay for, so make the most of it as BUYERS and do bid postally if you can’t get there in person (venue: The Guide Hall, Wrights Row, Wallington Green, unless the catalogue says otherwise). BUYING ACCESSORIES? Our hard-working President Ray Downing is not only Publicity Officer and FSPS Delegate, but also Sales Officer. He can obtain anything likely to be stocked at Vera Trinder’s: if you have any requests, do let him know. OUR WEBSITE. Webmaster Andy Donaldson continues to do wonders for what we might call our e-image. Contact him on adonaldson@stamp.demon.co.uk with newsbits and other items of interest: view the site itself on www.wdps.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk. THE CHRISTMAS PARTY (Dec 18th) is at St. Andrew's Church Hall, Herbert Road, Wimbledon, SW19 (our normal meeting venue). If you’re feeling seasonal and charitable, do dig out some items for the raffle and tell Tony Clarke. Thanks!
Michael
