The Association of British Philatelic Societies carries the sole and overall responsibility for the well-being of philately in the United Kingdom and the representation of United Kingdom philately in the international arena. How the ABPS exercises this responsibility is detailed below. Communication The ABPS provides the basis for a flexible network of communication between philatelists through its democratic structure of Federations, Associations, Societies and Clubs, reaching all individual members. This network is consolidated through ABPSТ publications Ц ABPS News, the Handbook and Directory, Philatelic Lecturers and Displays, and other occasional advisory publications. In addition, E-Bulletins are circulated to all members, generally following each meeting of the Executive. The website - www.ukphilately.org.uk - extends the scope of ABPSТ printed communications by making even more information available to individual members and the public at large. Our publications earn revenue from advertisers that helps meet the cost of production so that we can provide them to all our affiliated organisations, and to Patrons & Friends of Philately, free of charge. National Events The ABPS is responsible for many philatelic events. National Exhibitions and Competitions are held regularly at different locations around the UK, Midpex is a biennial event, and the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain is held yearly. Although organised locally, these events are co-ordinated, supported and underwritten financially by the ABPS. Such national and local events bring together UK collectors and dealers, and put on view the best of collections. Budgeted on a break-even basis, the ABPS underwrites any shortfall for each event. International Participation By its very nature, philately is an international activity and the ABPS plays its part in the world-wide philatelic scene, representing UK philately in the major international organisations, encouraging UK exhibitors to take part in international exhibitions, and providing the infrastructure to enable philatelic material to be shown around the world. The ABPS funds British membership of both the Federation International Philatelique and the Federation of European Philatelic Associations. The costs of participating in these activities are largely borne by the exhibitors. The Festival of Stamps 2010 Traditionally, as part of its commitment to the international scene, the United Kingdom plays host to a major international event every ten years. The next event will be in 2010. Intended to stimulate philately throughout the United Kingdom, the main focus will be an international exhibition, СLondon 2010Т. Coupled with the main event, the СFestival of StampsТ will bring a series of linked public activities nation-wide, and the ABPS is working closely with the British Postal Museum & Archive to develop this regional programme. A limited company exists for the organisation and planning which is already well under way. Substantial funding has already been provided by the ABPS, but more will be needed before 2010. Other Activities The Association of British Philatelic Societies undertakes many other activities including: Running courses and seminars on judging and other philatelic matters. Maintaining, storing and transporting a large stock of exhibition frames. Offering small-grant aid in support of particular projects proposed by individual philatelic societies. Giving individual members holding a current membership card the opportunity to obtain discounts and other benefits from philatelic businesses. Providing financial support to the Stamp Active Network (previously known as the National Youth Stamp Committee). Administration The ABPS is administered entirely by volunteer committees. This ensures only minimal overheads have to be borne such as stationery and postage, telephone and IT, cost of room hire, and the travel expenses of those involved with various working sub-committees. Finance Financing the activities of the ABPS falls into three parts - routine running costs, providing Сseed-cornТ funding prior to events in which it is involved, and holding sufficient funds in hand to underwrite events which may not pay their way. By and large, the aim of the ABPS is to break even on all organised events but as the number of events have increased so there is need to build up a sufficient reserve of funds to support these activities. Our main source of funds is the capitation fee paid annually by affiliated societies supplemented by the generous support of individual Patrons and Friends of Philately. To maintain its activities Ц and to expand them as finance allows Ц the ABPS needs the support of all UK philatelic societies as affiliates - and individuals as Patrons and Friends of Philately.
